Norton Engineering has a wide range of experience working with both sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid (HF) alkylation units. Our experienced engineers are familiar with the unique challenges and dangers that an alkylation unit presents.
NEC has provided debottlenecking and troubleshooting services for both HF and sulfuric units and helped customers boost octane in alkylate, reduce catalyst consumption (sulfuric acid), improve reliability and catalyst mixing, reduce energy consumption, and reduce sulfur content of finished product.
NEC is aware of the high risk an alkylation unit presents to a refinery and has also done extensive research for the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) regarding new alternatives to traditional sulfuric and HF technologies and the commercial cost of adopting one of these new technologies. NEC has also designed HF Alkylation Rapid Acid Transfer Systems (RATS) to safely and quickly move acid out of the reactor system in the event of a leak.

- “Cold eye” reviews and feasibility studies including: FEL 0,1,2 process design studies to develop and assess project upgrades. Coordination with technology providers and technology integration.
